Do What You Enjoy and Can Stay Consistent With…

What is the best exercise/workout I should be doing?

A question I often get asked.

My simple 2 answers to the question are “What do you enjoy doing?” and “What do you see yourself continuing to do consistently for the next 6 months, 12 months, 5 years, 10 years plus?”

For me there are certain areas of training that you should be incorporating into your routine on a regular basis, but I’ll cover those in another blog. The key aspect is consistency. You need to see yourself doing what you are doing on a regular basis to see results. Whether that is gym training, exercise classes, swimming, running, horse riding, badminton, whatever. And unless you are INCREDIBLY motivated and disciplined, the only way you will be consistent is if you are enjoying what you are doing.

That doesn’t mean that you won’t get bored and want to move onto something else after a while. That’s absolutely fine. Just find something else you enjoy doing.

I hear it alot. “I just don’t enjoy exercise”. Really? Have you tried ALL the different types of exercise the world has to offer?

Probably not. The chances are, you’ve decided you need to get fit or lose weight. You’ve signed up to a gym. Then you’ve been shown the basics and spend the rest of your gym time doing the same stuff. Some steady cardio (treadmill, bike, cross trainer etc), some resistance machines, finished off with some ab crunches or similar mat based stomach exercises… YES that will get boring. To be honest, there are so many options in a gym alone that you shouldn’t be getting bored, but if that isn’t for you, again not a problem.

What else have you tried? Swimming, running…. How about canoeing, or climbing, or martial arts, or just a different exercise class….?

There are so many options, I seldom accept the “I just don’t enjoy exercise” response.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS GET OFF YOUR BUM AND MOVE.

Open your mind and try something new and different.
