Phones In The Gym

Do you take/use your mobile phone in the gym? If so, what do you use it for?

For me there are 4 different categories of people in the gym...

1) Those who either leave their phone at home or in the locker.

2) Those who have their phone on them purely for music.

3) Those who use their phone for music and occasionally reply to messages or emails.

4) Those who are on their phones almost constantly, taking unnecessary calls, replying to all messages/emails or playing games.

To be honest, whichever category you fall into is completely up to you (although if someone is taking a loud call or playing games and monopolising a piece of equipment, it is very annoying to others).

BUT....

You need to think about why you are at the gym in the first place. Now I'm presuming it's to work on your goals as effectively and efficiently as possible. After all, you are paying a membership fee and using your precious time to be there. If this is the case, then being on your phone constantly is the complete opposite to what you should be doing.

You should be focussed throughout your workout. I barely even talk to anyone while I'm training. I put my earphones in, listen to music, and focus on what I am doing. Technique, rest periods, effort level, your next set. These are all things you should be thinking about. My time is very tight so I do not waste it in the gym, I use it efficiently. Some people say "I spent 2 hours in the gym today". Yes maybe you did, but how much of that time was spend messaging, browsing the internet or talking to others? Could you have done the same, if not more, in half the time?

Todays phones are a wonderful thing but do not allow them to distract you from why you are at the gym in the first place. Stay focussed. AND DON'T BE THAT PERSON!!
